Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wooed by business leaders as couple invited to Davos summit

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wouldn’t be the first royals to attend the prestigious event, but banking insiders are eager to work with the couple. If the Duke and Duchess were to accept the invitation, experts have estimated the couple could walk away with a eye-watering £1billion – through a mix of corporate deals and brand ambassador roles. It comes after the couple spoke at a JP Morgan event in Miami, Florida – their first appearance together after they announced they were quitting as senior members of the Royal Family.

PR guru Mark Borkowski told the Mirror that he was not surprised by the news Meghan and Harry could be invited to speak at the event.

While a banking source told the newspaper: “Harry and Meghan have set a clear path to work with big banks and corporate giants as well as doing altruistic work with charities.

“The mix works well with the target audience and the celebrity set. However, it is sure to raise eyebrows in royal circles.

“It has echoes of other royals criticised for touting themselves to the highest bidder and all becomes rather tawdry.”

But if the couple decide to attend the event it could be odds with their climate campaigning, as the summit was heavily criticised by campaigners this year.

17-year-old Greta Thunberg led the charge as she criticised world and business leaders for ignoring calls to break away from fossil fuels.

Speaking at the final day of the summit, the Swedish campaigner said leaders were not reacting to the crisis and were not being held accountable for their inaction.

Meghan and Harry have previously championed climate causes and the need to protect the environment, with the Duke commenting that they would have no more than two children due to concerns about the climate.

But the royals were blasted last summer for their repeated use of private jets – which was seen as at odds with their protectionist rhetoric.

This year’s forum was held from January 21-24 and was attended by Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles.

Charles, who met Miss Thunberg at the event, gave a keynote speech on the climate crisis.

He said: “Global warming, climate change and the devastating loss of biodiversity are the greatest threats humanity has ever faced.”

He urged business leaders to put sustainability at the centre of business models.

Prince William attended the leading event the year before to discuss mental health initiatives.

Earlier this month it was revealed Meghan and Harry attended an event sponsored by investment banking firm JP Morgan.

Harry spoke at the event and has since held talks with Goldman Sachs to become a guest speaker on its YouTube series.

Meghan and Harry will officially step back from royal duties at the end of next month.

After this date the couple will no longer have an office at Buckingham Palace and will be represented through their UK charity – which is set to launch later this year.
