Meghan Markle and Prince Harry: Are couple ever going to launch Archewell charity?

So far they have signed deals with Netflix and high-end speaking agency Harry Walker, alongside the likes of the Obamas and other American royalty. The couple has decided on many new jobs for themselves, including political commentators and social media experts in recent weeks.

But one of the couple’s main ventures – Archewell – is yet to materialise.

No official announcement has been made recently about the full launch of their independent charity venture.

However, while hosting a TIME100 talk this month, Harry and Meghan spoke about the state of social media and why it’s important to create online communities that are more compassionate, safe, and trustworthy, something which TIME said was “a building block of the Sussexes’ nonprofit Archewell.”

Prince Harry said: “What our job is, especially throughout these conversations, is to get people to listen to the experts and for them to explain how what’s happening in the online world is affecting the world.

“It is not restricted to certain platforms or certain social media conversations.

“This is a global crisis: a global crisis of hate, a global crisis of misinformation and a global health crisis.”

The Duchess of Sussex backed up her husband, saying: “Both of us realized that we can continue to champion these things that we’re passionate about.

“We can continue to do this work to try to affect change and help the people who need it most or the communities or environments that need it most, but it’s almost like you’re taking two steps forward and five steps backward if you can’t get to the root cause of the problem.

“Which at this point right now we see in a large way as a lot of what’s happening in the tech space.

“This isn’t just a tech problem. This isn’t solely a mental health or emotional wellbeing problem.

“This is a human problem. And what’s happening to all of us online is affecting us deeply offline.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t give many concrete clues as to what Archewell will actually encompass.

What is Archewell?

Archewell is meant to be the couple’s non-profit venture launched after the couple left behind their Sussex Royal brand following a request from the Queen that they do not use the royal brand to promote themselves and their work.

The non-profit aims to offer “classes, lectures, seminars, conferences, workshops, and retreats on a variety of topics,” run a mentoring scheme, or conduct and host “events and exhibitions for cultural, sporting, health, mental health and entertainment purposes.”

It will also self-publish articles, magazines, books, music, television shows and podcasts.

The announcement of the non-profit went ahead in the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis – but the couple were forced to shelve plans as lockdowns took place in America.

As coronavirus is still sweeping America, it may be likely the couple has decided to wait until the pandemic is through until they begin fully assembling the charity.

Earlier this year, the couple released a statement saying: “Like you, our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be.

“Before Sussex Royal, came the idea of Arche – the Greek word meaning source of action.

“We connected to this concept for the charitable organisation we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name.

“To do something of meaning, to do something that matters.

“Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon.

“We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”
