Meghan made her first official appearance since her bombshell interview with TV talk show host legend Oprah Winfrey over the weekend. As campaign co-chair for Global Citizen’s Vax Live concert, she recorded a message for an audience of 20,000 advocating vaccine access for the global population. It’s now been 14 months since she was last seen in the UK, but her tell-all interview back in March sent shockwaves around the world — and shook the Palace’s foundations.

She and Prince Harry made a series of heavy allegations against the Firm, particularly about how it handles mental health and race — but the couple also emphasised how little support they felt they had from their fellow royals when they were still the Queen’s working representatives.

Speaking to her friend and neighbour Oprah, Meghan recalled entering the Royal Family and writing letters to Harry’s family which said: “I am dedicated to this. I’m here for you. Use me as you’d like.”

Despite her apparent enthusiasm, she said there was no training to help her adapt to royal life.

Meghan claimed: “There was no guidance as well, right?”

However, in the pro-Sussex biography Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand alleged that Meghan received some training from the Queen during their first joint royal engagement to open the Mersey Gateway Bridge in June 2018.

They claimed: “The Queen was wonderful, warm, and generous towards the new Duchess, a source close to Her Majesty said.

“She made sure Meghan knew what was going on and made her feel very much at home because it was her first trip.

“Indeed, before the two stepped off the train, the Queen gifted Meghan with a delicate pair of pearl-and-diamond earrings.

“Meghan, an avid learner studying all she could on royal protocol, was often seen carrying binders full of research so she didn’t put a foot wrong.”

However, they claimed: “That day was different though; she was getting a royal masterclass in training from the Queen herself.”

This was Meghan’s first official royal event with just the Queen, and demonstrated how she was potentially receiving more favourable treatment than Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate did not go on her first solo royal engagement with the monarch until 2019 — eight years after she first joined the royal frontline — while Meghan’s trip with the Queen took place just a month after her wedding.

Mr Scobie and Ms Durand said they had not collaborated with Meghan and Harry when writing their biography, while the Sussexes also denied having any involvement in the favourable account of their royal exit when Finding Freedom was published last August.

While Meghan did mention her first royal outing with the Queen during her interview — she admitted “I just really loved being in her company” and claimed the monarch made her feel “welcomed” — her version of events contrasts with Finding Freedom’s.

The Duchess of Sussex went into great detail about how she felt she had been thrown into the deep end when she first joined the royals.

She told Oprah: “There were certain things that you couldn’t do.

“But, you know, unlike what you see in the movies, there’s no class on how to… how to speak, how to cross your legs, how to be royal.

“There’s none of that training.

“That might exist for other members of the family. That was not something that was offered to me.”

She added she did not even know the words to the National Anthem, and ended up googling it because “I don’t want to embarrass them”.

She continued: “I need to learn these 30 hymns for church. All of this televised.

“We [Meghan and Harry] were doing the training behind the scenes, because I just wanted to make them proud.”

Despite often appearing united with other members of the Royal Family when in public, Meghan also said: “My understanding and my experience of the past four years is nothing like what it looks like.”

‘Finding Freedom’ by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Duran was published in 2020 by HarperCollins and is available here.
