M3 traffic latest: Motorway closed after ‘chemical spill’ – drivers must keep windows shut

The chemical spill happened this morning and has therefore forced the police to close the A322 bypass to the M3 as they deal with the accident.  The A322 Lightwater Bypass has therefore been closed in both directions.

Surrey Police have also instructed residents of the area, to keep windows closed in the area.

The police added: “The A322 Lightwater Bypass is closed from Gordon Boys roundabout to the M3 due to a police incident.

“For your own safety, please do not go round the closures. It is currently unclear as to what the incident is.

“At this time, our advice to local residents near Lightwater is to keep windows and doors closed.”

The closure reportedly covers an area close to two miles.

According to SurreyLive, the bypass was closed at 10am this morning.

Moreover, due to the direction of the wind, the police have also stated that any residents downwind of Farm Lane should go inside.

They added: “Due to a suspected chemical incident being investigated in the Farm Lane area of Lightwater there are several road closures and advisories in effect.”

BBC Surrey also stated: “A suspected chemical spill has closed a number of roads in Surrey including Junction 3 of the M3.

“People in Lightwater have been told to keep their doors and windows closed as police deal with the incident in the Farm Lane area.

“The A322 is closed in both directions.”

A reporter for SurreyLive, Will Bradley reported that multiple police cars were now at the scene.
