M25 traffic latest: Severe delays on Dartford Crossing with nine mile queues

Delays of up to 60 minutes were suffered by drivers at the traffic jam’s peak, and nine miles of traffic backed up to the A127 at junction 29 at Romford after a lorry stalled on the bridge. Clockwise traffic began building soon after 8am, sparking long delays into rush hour and beyond this morning.

Highways England tweeted: “There is a broken down lorry on the #QE2 bridge in lane 1. This will be recovered shortly. Approach with caution.”

The lane has since re-opened but Highways England said up to six miles of traffic remains between Essex and Kent.

In further tweets Highways England said: “If travelling in #Essex this morning pls be aware this is causing LONG DELAYS with congestion approaching the #M25 J29. There is approx 5 miles of congestion in the area which is likely to add around 30 minutes onto your usual journey times. Plan ahead if using the #QEIIBridge.”

It has been a troublesome day for M25 drivers today with numerous crashes and hold ups.

In addition, another broken down lorry at the exit slip of junction 3 at Swanley just after the Dartford Crossing caused further delays on the clockwise route at about 8am.

Highways England said: “There is a broken down lorry on the #M25 clockwise on the exit slip at J3 #Stanley. #TrafficOfficers are towards to assist. Please approach with caution.

“Unfortunately #TrafficOfficers are unable to move the standed lorry, recovery has been arranged.”

It took two hours for the lorry to be recovered and lanes to re-open.

And a crash on the A13 near the junction with the M25 caused further delays on the eastbound London to Essex route.

On the anti-clockwise carriageway a crash took place at junction 12 for Thorpe in the outside lane at around 9.30am.

And nearby at the exit slip road for junction 13 clockwise for Ogham a broken down car blocked the route at about 10am this morning.

Meanwhile in Kent a vehicle was stranded clockwise between junction 5 for Sevenoaks and junction 6 for Godstone at about 9.30am.

The route was cleared at about 10.15am.
