M1 traffic latest: M1 CLOSED in both directions after crash – seven miles of tailbacks

Highways England has reported police and traffic officers are now on the scene of the crash. There are reports of of “long delays” southbound between junction two and five. 

Highways England tweeted: “There is approximately 7 miles of congestion which is likely to add around 70 mins onto usual journey times.

“For diversion exit at J4 and follow the hollow circle symbol.”

The crash happened shortly before 6am this morning. 

According to traffic monitoring service Inrix: “The accident has been moved to the shoulder, there’s a diesel spillage which is in the process of being cleared from the road.”

Diversions have also been put in place from J4 with traffic being directed via Mill Hill Circus, Brent Cross on to Staples Corner. 

It has been reported the crash was caused by a diesel spill on the road. 

TFL Traffic News said: “M1 remains closed southbound J2 to J1 due to diesel spill.

“Long tailbacks southbound on A1 on approach to Apex Corner and also on A41 on diversion.”

Although there was a crash this morning, there have been no reports of injuries.
