Lib Dem misery: ‘Delusional’ Swinson sparks fury as she claims party rivals want her as PM

The Liberal Democrats leader kicked off her campaigning with a battle bus tour of Tory marginals on Wednesday, with her party insisting that she has a real chance of becoming the next Prime Minister. Party officials point to the Lib Dems recent success in the European and council elections in May, as well as to recent polling, to back up their claims that they can gains “hundreds” of new MPs in the forthcoming election. Ms Swinson exuded this new found optimism while talking to journalists on her campaign bus.

She said that it was “entirely feasible” that more Tory and Labour MPs would choose to join her party if it achieved a “breakthrough” on December 12.

The MP for East Dunbartonshire went on to say that:”I have also had MPs from both those parties saying to me that they think I would be a better prime minister than Jeremy Corbyn or Boris Johnson.

“There will be people very excited to see Lib Dems winning more seats – and that includes people in other parties.

She added: “The Labour Party is lost and One Nation Conservatives are in utter dismay at the direction Boris Johnson is taking their party.”

The Lib Dem leader was immediately mocked on social media for being delusional and a fantasist.

Bill Smith, quoting former Liberal leader David Steele’s now infamous rally call at the Liberal Party’s Assembly in 1981, posted:”’Go back to your constituencies, and prepare for government!’

“So they have been preparing for almost 40 years and still are nowhere near.”

Another wrote:”This delusion detracts from serious messages and gives opportunities to opponents to ridicule.

“Swinson is beginning to look like a naive lightweight and a liability.

“Lib Dems might be kingmakers but not kings.

“She will need to fight really hard just to keep her own seat.”

While David Exeter commented: “Think she would make a good stand up comedian, but not an MP or god forbid a PM.”

Earlier on Tuesday Ms Swinson savaged Jeremy Corbyn, labelling him as a ‘national security threat’ during the launch of her party’s election campaign.

Speaking in London, she targeted the Labour leader in an effort to bolster support for her party ahead of the December 12 general election.

Labelling Mr Corbyn as a “national security threat,” Ms Swinson attempted to tilt the balance in her party’s favour in the fight for Remain voters.

On top of her accusing Mr Corybn of being a national threat, she said the leader of the opposition is “not fit for the job of Prime Minister”.

This culminated in her “absolutely categorically ruling out” a Liberal Democrat alliance with Labour should a hung Parliament materialise.

She said: “On so many grounds, Jeremy Corbyn is not fit for the job of prime minister.

“On the biggest issue of the day [Brexit] he has prevaricated and will not give a straight answer.

“Even now if you ask him whether he is Remain or Leave he will not tell you how he would vote.

“His plans for the economy would take us back to the 1970s, I believe he would be a threat to our national security.”
