Labour MP grilled by Sky News host on new Brexit stance – ‘We aren’t sure’

The Shadow Justice Secretary argued Labour’s new position “couldn’t be clearer” as he said they will get a deal from the EU and put that to the people along with the option to Remain. Mr Burgon added they would honour the outcome no matter its verdict. Mr Murnaghan asked if Labour was going to campaign on Brexit in a general election as “we aren’t sure”.

Speaking on Sky News, Mr Burgon said: “The Labour Party will be campaigning in a general election which we hope we get before Christmas to get Boris Johnson and the Tories out by then.

“We will be campaigning in a general election to say that things have moved on so much with Boris Johnson very relaxed about a no deal Brexit that we’re going to let the people decide.

“A Labour Government will negotiate a credible leave deal, get that offer from the EU and that’s not new work that’s work we;ve been doing already and we will put that deal and Remain to the people.

“That Labour Government will honour the outcome of the vote whatever it is.”

Mr Murnaghan pushed and questioned how their new stance would go on a leaflet or the side of a bus as members of the public have been left confused.

Mr Burgon added: “It’s for the people to decide. It’s about the people deciding, it’s not about politicians telling people what to do.

“Do they want a credible leave option or want to Remain? Fundamentally it’s up to every single voter in this country.”

Mr Burgon’s comments come as Labour delegates voted down a motion for the party to campaign for Remain if a second Brexit referendum is held.

The vote marks a victory for Mr Corbyn after his party’s conference got off to a rocky start.

Mr Corbyn has argued to stay neutral on the referendum as the public has criticised him for “sitting on the fence”.

However Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer argued for Remain in a speech ahead of the vote.

He said: So, I have a very simple message today: If you want a referendum – Vote Labour.

“If you want a final say on Brexit – Vote Labour. If you want to fight for Remain – Vote Labour. Labour will let the people decide.

“Conference, you know where I stand on the question of Remain: I’ve said many times that I will campaign for it.

“But I profoundly respect those who take a different view. And Conference, let’s go into this with our eyes open.

“In 2016 Labour campaigned for Remain. We did so because we are internationalists. We stand in solidarity with our friends and neighbours in Europe. “
