Despite rarely returning to the UK, both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were heavily visible in the public eye during the official ten-day mourning period following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Some royal commentators had suggested their appearance demonstrated that an olive branch had been extended to welcome the Duke and Duchess back into the institution. However, royal author Christopher Anderson has claimed the decisions of King Charles regarding the presence of Prince Harry and Meghan during the state funeral service could have resulted in a “lot of damage” to his relationship with the Sussexes.

During an appearance on the Royally Us podcast, Mr Anderson said: “The King’s decision to initially not permit Harry to wear his uniform during the funeral.”

He continued: “At times, it seemed as though Harry and Meghan were being shoved in the background and even shunned.

“That did a lot of damage, I think, so we will have to wait and see where they go with this.”

Prince Harry was initially banned from wearing his military uniform during royal engagements surrounding the Queen’s funeral as he is not a working member of the Royal Family.

However, the Duke of Sussex was later granted special permission to wear his military attire during a ceremonial vigil over his grandmother’s coffin.

Discussing the consequences of the King’s decision, Mr Anderson added: “I am almost certain that they [the Royal Family] won’t like this book and I don’t know what Charles will do about it.

“He’s like his mother when it comes to the monarchy, he is tough.”

Prince Harry is due to release a tell-all memoir of his life titled ‘Spare’, although an exact publication date has not been confirmed.

Mr Anderson suggested: “There can only be bombshells in that book”

Commenting on his book deal, Prince Harry said: “I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”

In wake of the Queen’s death, Prince Harry was rumoured to be making edits to the content of his memoir in order to prevent the publication from appearing distasteful at such a sensitive time for the Royal Family.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield reported: “[Prince Harry] is afraid that he’ll come off as insensitive and he’s afraid that there will be a backlash if he releases some of these stories right after the death of Queen Elizabeth as his father King Charles is trying to start his reign on a high note.

“We’re being told that he is hustling, trying to get some items removed, trying to work around some of the stories he’s told in his book.

“However, that just might not be an option at this time, if he really does want that fall release date close to Christmas to get the Christmas rush, those pages may already be on the printer.”

With the official mourning period concluded and Prince Harry and Meghan back in the US, the Duchess of Sussex has resumed her media engagements.

Discussing the passing of Queen Elizabeth II with Variety, Meghan Markle said: “I’m really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time.”

She described the mourning period as a “complicated time” but added she felt “deep gratitude” to have shared a relationship with the late monarch.

The Duchess of Sussex did not discuss her current personal relationship with members of the wider Royal Family but affirmed: “I continue to be proud to have had a nice warmth with the matriarch of the family.”
