Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 38, and Prince William, 37, have returned to royal duties following the Christmas break. The couple’s first trip of 2020 was to the West Yorkshire city of Bradford where they carried out a string of engagements.

Kate and Wills seemed calm and happy as they greeted fans, despite the ongoing royal crisis around Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

The red carpet was rolled out for Kate and William as they greeted crowds of royal fans gathered outside Bradford City Hall.

The charming Duchess looked stylish as ever in a long olive green dress coat and black heels.

She and Wills greeted royal fans with gusto and Kate was captured chatting to adoring adults and schoolchildren alike.

In one heartwarming moment, a female fan burst into tears as Kate hugged a young supporter named Josh standing beside her.

The young fan was waiting with his mother Sue in the crowd hoping to speak to the Duchess when Kate approached and gave him a heartfelt hug.

The sweet moment in Centenary Square was captured on camera.

Kate told Josh she loved his coat, adding “George would love your coat, he loves camouflage”.

As well as greeting well-wishers Kate and Wills visited British Asian ‘My Lahore’s’ flagship restaurant where they tried their hand at making Kulfi and chatted to representatives of the UK Women’s Muslim Council.

They also met boxer and Bradford local Amir Khan during their trip to promote cohesion with one of Britain’s most diverse cities.

During their visit to Bradford Khidmat Centre Kate chatted to a group of women crocheting and let slip a sweet admission.

The Duchess of Cambridge said: ”I tried knitting when I first had George.

“I tried to knit him a very special jumper, but I got half way down and it splattered. It’s such an amazing skill.”

While at the centre Prince William and Kate also got stuck in with a session of the Older Yet Wiser project, which supports grandparents with child-caring responsibilities.

As the group sang the “banana song”, which included the lyrics “peel bananas, peel peel bananas.”

Kate even picked up 18-month-old Sorayah Ahmad and danced with the youngster, helping her shake her rattle in time with the music.

During the trip proud Aston Villa Fan William chatted about his team with chief executive of Burnley Football Club David Baldwin.

William discussed injured Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton and said: “Poor Tom, it’s a horrible injury.”

He agreed that new signing Danny Drinkwater needs “more game time”, before looking round and joking: “I realise we’re going to start talking about football (now).”

Kate and William’s trip shone a light on the positive roles senior royals can play at a tumultuous time for the institution.

The family was plunged into crisis last week after Meghan and Prince Harry announced they would step down as senior royals without consulting the Queen.

A crisis royal summit was held at Sandringham on Monday following which the Queen confirmed Meghan and Harry would go through a “transition period” in which they would spend an increasing amount of time in Canada.
