Kate, Duchess of Cambridge paid a visit to Fakenham Garden Centre on Thursday. The visit marked the first in-person engagement Kate has completed since before the lockdown started in March. Kate has been isolating at the royal residence of Anmer Hall in Norfolk, along with her husband Prince William and their three royal children: Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2.

Kate’s visit to the garden centre on Thursday is one of many visits the Royal Family has made this week, which have aimed to highlight the resilience of British businesses in wake of the coronavirus crisis.

In addition, the visit to the garden centre also held strong links to the Duchess’ love of the outdoors and nature.

Kate mentioned during the visit how much she enjoys visiting garden centres with her own family.

Kate said: “They love it, it’s such a great space for children and families.

“I’ve been food shopping but I have to say I haven’t been out a huge amount more but it’s good and so important, now as things start to ease, people know they can go out and particularly to places like this.”

Kate also said on Thursday Prince George is fascinated by Venus Flytraps when he makes the trip to garden centres with his mum.

The Cambridge children have also been busy growing their own tomato plants from scratch while on lockdown.

Kate added: “They were very excited to grow them from seeds and now they’re as tall as them.”

Since joining the Royal Family, Kate has been a huge advocate for families spending time outdoors and enjoying nature.

Along with the Royal Horticultural Society, Kate even helped to design the Back to Nature Garden for the Chelsea Flower Show last year.

The Duchess told the BBC at the time: “I really feel that nature and being interactive outdoors has huge benefits on our physical and mental wellbeing, particularly for young children.

“I really hope that this woodland that we have created really inspires families, kids and communities to get outside, enjoy nature and the outdoors, and spend quality time together.”

Kate commented on Thursday’s visit about how the lockdown has meant people are spending more time in the great outdoors.

She said: “It’s come up in so many different conversations whether it’s food, volunteering, and in all the mental health work that we’ve been doing, about how everyone is benefiting from being outside.

“So yes, they’ve been in lockdown but loads of families have been out on walks, more than they would do, outside.”

While Kate completed her first in-person engagement, husband Prince William has also recently returned for face-to-face royal engagements this week.

This week William visited Smiths the Bakers in King’s Lynn, where he revealed his three children have been “attacking the kitchen” during lockdown.

While at the bakery William was treated to a vanilla sponge cake, as he will be celebrating his 38th birthday on Sunday, June 21.

William also picked up some goodies for his family, stating: “My children will not talk to me if I turn up without enough.”

Both William and Kate have been frequent fixtures on social media during the pandemic.

The Duke and Duchess have regularly appeared via video calls to support NHS and frontline workers throughout the crisis.
