Kate Middleton devastated: Duchess on royal life without Prince William – ‘felt cut off’

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William welcomed son Prince George in 2013. This week, Kate visited Cardiff to attend a baby sensory class at the Ely and Careau Children’s Centre and spoke about being “isolated” when her firstborn son was a “tiny baby” and William worked as an RAF pilot.

The Duchess of Cambridge went on a 24-hour tour of Britain this week, with one part taking place in the Welsh capital.

While there, Kate launched a landmark survey on early childhood development.

Speaking to the parents at the centre, she recalled living on Anglesey in North Wales after George was born and her husband was an RAF Search and Rescue helicopter pilot.

After hearing about the support parents receive from the Ely and Careau Children’s Centre, Kate said: “It’s nice to be back in Wales.

“I was chatting to some of the mums, I had just had George and William was still working with search and rescue, so we came up here when George was a tiny, tiny little baby, in the middle of Anglesey.

“It was so isolated, so cut off, I didn’t have my family around me, he was doing night shifts, so if only I’d had a centre like this at a certain time…”

Head of the centre, Carolyn Asante, told the honest Duchess: “That’s the thing, we all need it (support).

“It’s not about social status. When you’re a parent, you take home this little baby and I don’t know about you but I didn’t know which way was up or down.”

Following the visit, Ms Asante praised Kate for being “so genuine and down to earth”.

She said she was happy there would be a focus on the development of younger children thanks to Kate’s survey.

Ms Asante said: “She was genuinely interested in what the children had to say, and you can’t fake that.

“It’s great to have the spotlight shone on the early years because everyone here recognises its importance and that it’s such a crucial stage of development, so if we can get it right at this stage we’ve given children the best possible start.

“I think it’s brilliant she’s chosen this to be her focus.”

Ms Asante added: “It doesn’t matter where you come from, as a parent you will benefit from this kind of approach.

“This non-judgmental group you can go to when you’ve had a rubbish morning at home and you’re not feeling as though anything’s going right or you’re doing a good job.

“The plan was to roll out this kind of model more widely, but there has never been the money.”

As Kate arrived at the centre, she told her hosts: “I will have to remember my Welsh!”

She also mentioned her children, adding: “We will be taking a trip down to Anglesey at some point.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge lived on Anglesey from 2010 to 2013.

Prince William worked as an RAF helicopter pilot at the base’s former location at RAF Valley, Anglesey.

Last spring, the couple revisited their former home and met some of William’s former colleagues before joining a beach litter pick.

Richard Taylor, who worked with Prince William at RAF Valley, said: “It was a real honour and a privilege, the time we got to spend working with him at Valley.

“We got quite close with him which not everybody gets in life so we were very fortunate.

“Absolutely lovely couple as well, so to see them again today – I know they were both keen to come back and have a look at what we do now and see some old faces.

“I think he could have spent hours talking about it and reminiscing on the past to be honest, if he’d had the time.”
