Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge are predicted to move to Buckingham Palace sooner than expected, according to a royal expert. With Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall planning to remain at Clarence House, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could exchange their current apartments at Kensington Palace for “more prestigious” rooms at the traditional home of the British monarch.

Royal expert Christine-Marie Liawg Dixon said: “Prince William and Kate definitely don’t live in a tiny shack in England.

“In fact, after they got married, the pair moved into an apartment at Kensington Palace.

“Once Prince William becomes king, their residence will change.

“Their upgrade will be a lot bigger, and a whole lot more prestigious.”

It has been a tradition since 1837, when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne, for British monarchs to reside at Buckingham Palace.

Ms Liwag Dixon noted that it would be likely for Prince William to follow suit, as there had already been reports of him and the Cambridge family moving to the Palace during the pandemic.

The royal expert noted that in a change from royal tradition, ” the family could actually move to Buckingham Palace before William becomes king.”

Prince Charles is next in line to the throne but has made clear his plans to remain at his current residence, Clarence House.

The Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla moved into Clarence House, the former residence of the Queen Mother, in 2002.

His plan to remain at his current residence forms part of his vision for a slimmed-down monarchy.

Prince Charles hopes to open many of the royal residences to the public, including Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

As reported by The Sunday Times, Prince Charles “recognises it needs to keep evolving, and in the modern era people want to be able to access their palaces,”

Other senior members of the Royal Family, including Prince William, have been consulted on Charles’ plans to modernise the monarchy.

This includes reducing the number of working royals who are dependent on the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant.

Other royal residences include Kensington Palace, St James’s Palace, Sandringham Estate, and Balmoral.

Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing a £369m renovation that is due to finish in 2027.
