Judge calls racist a 'sad loner' for saying Muslims should be wiped off earth

A student who went on a ran on Facebook about Muslim people has been jailed for 18 months.

Louis Duxbury, 22, went on a 17-minute ‘call to arms’ in which he said that members of the faith ‘should be wiped off the face of the earth’.

He made his comments after terror attacks in Westminster, at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena, London Bridge and Finsbury Park.

He was expelled from York St John University when a fellow sports science student reported him and the police were called.

Duxbury was already known to police after teachers reported him when he was just 15 for comments he posted online following the murder of Lee Rigby.

Judge Sean Morris warned Duxbury that his video could contribute to future attacks on Muslims.

He said: ‘[The UK] has been a multi-racial and multi-faith island for thousands of years and will continue to be so.

‘We have to live together in harmony because otherwise mayhem follows. I think you are a bit of a sad loner, but you have to go to prison.’

Duxbury denied religious hatred but was convicted by a jury which heard that he refused to take part in anti-radicalisation process Prevent.

He claimed the video was a rant and that he believes in a diverse, multicultural society. He said he was only talking about extremists and terrorists, not Muslims in general, and denied that he was being racist or fascist.

The university said in a statement: ‘Incitement to violence of any kind is abhorrent and there is absolutely no place for racist behaviour or language at York St John University.

‘Whilst we are saddened to see behaviour that does not reflect our commitment to equality and human rights, we know that cases like this are extremely rare amongst our student community.

‘We are pleased that our students identified this behaviour as unacceptable and brought their concerns to us.’

Detective Constable Mike Holden said: ‘I hope this goes to show that people who attempt to stir up tensions between communities will be dealt with robustly.

‘York and North Yorkshire is a safe place to live and work, and I want communities to be reassured that North Yorkshire Police will always take positive action against people who are threatening towards others because of their race or religion.’
