Jean-Claude Juncker slams David Cameron as one of the ‘biggest destroyers of modern era’

In an angry tirade during a visit to Germany, Mr Juncker said the UK will be forced to take part in European elections in May if it wants another extension.

But the Commission president suggested he could oppose such a move. He said: “If the British haven’t left by April 12 and there is an extension, then Britain must take part in the European election.”

He added: “That is [in] the treaty.

“Whether I want that is another question.”

Mr Juncker said if the EU had been able to take part in the 2016 campaign “we could have asked – and also answered – many questions that are only being asked now”.

He said it was time for Westminster to spell out what it wants on Brexit and claimed it was easier to decipher the “mythical sphinx” than UK politicians.
