Italy’s coronavirus death toll passes 10,000 as almost 900 more die in a day

Another 889 people have died in Italy after contracting coronavirus.

The death toll in the country has risen to 10,023 over thelast 24 hours – by far the highest worldwide and the latest in a series ofincreasingly tragic milestones.

Italy’s largest daily total was registered on Friday, when919 people died. Prior to that, there were 712 deaths on Thursday, 683 onWednesday, 743 on Tuesday and 602 on Monday.

There are now 92,472 confirmed cases, up from 86,498 on Friday. The country has the second highest number of cases, behind the United States. It surpassed China’s total on Friday.


However, there was a glimmer of good news among the figures.

Over the past 24 hours 1,434 people recovered from Covid-19 –the highest number all week – bringing the total number to 12,384.

The rate of new infections also fell by 750 compared toFriday.

There remain 3,856 people in intensive care.
