Insiders reveal ‘silent but steely’ individual who played key role in Sussex split

An influence in the decision is, according to her friends, Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland. The Mail on Sunday report Ms Ragland’s loyalty towards Harry and Meghan played a vital role in their decision to seek financial independence in North America. One former confidant of Ms Ragland explained: “Harry in particular turns to her for advice.

“She is like the Queen – she never complains and never explains.

“She’s laid-back, and people see her nose ring and dreadlocks which are cool – but make no mistake, she has a core of steel.”

They warned: “Underestimate her at your peril.

“Meghan has always trusted her completely but she has become a rock to Harry who, of course, lost his own mother so young.

“Doria has a great warmth. She’s a brilliant cook and is very motherly, but she isn’t someone who seeks attention, and for Harry her discretion and silence mean the world.”

Ms Ragland was the only member of Meghan’s family to attend the couple’s wedding.

The source added: “Doria has always been someone who values her privacy and no more so than now.

“But she has been back and forth for the last few weeks. And when she’s not with them, she is on the phone constantly.”

After the birth of the couple’s son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Ms Ragland spent six weeks at Frogmore Cottage to help the first time parents.

The source continued: “Doria comes across as this nose-ring wearing, dreadlocked hippy but she has total self-belief, something she passed on to Meghan.

“Doria’s advice to Meghan was always, ‘Don’t give the milk away for free’.

“When Meghan and Harry announced they were walking away from their jobs as Royals to be financially independent, it immediately smacked of Doria.”

They added: “Being financially independent has always been important to her.”

The Sussex’s receive 95 percent of their funding from Charles, Prince of Wales.

As part of the agreement on their new roles, the couple have agreed to pay back the £2.4 million spent to renovate their Frogmore Cottage property to the taxpayer.

With Harry stepping down from being a full time working royal, there has been suggestion his cousin Lady Louise Windsor, 16, could replace him.

The Queen’s granddaughter has recently attended several royal events with her parents, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex.

Royal author Phil Dampier told the Daily Mail that Sophie could step up to fill the void left by Sussex’s: “It’s been said for a long time that Prince Charles wants a slimmed down monarchy when he becomes king – but I’m not sure they meant this slim!

“Prince Philip is retired at 98, the Queen is nearly 94 and Charles and Camilla are in their 70s.

“Princess Anne is 70 this year and the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra are in their 80s. So who is going to take over the hundreds of patronages?”

On Sophie, Mr Dampier explained: “Recently she has been on several overseas trips and done fantastically well.

“Now that her children are a bit older I think there could be a great role for her to play.

“She is 55 today and she is very fit and full of energy.”
