Emma Raducanu became the first British woman to reach the final at Flushing Meadows since 1968. The teenager from Bromley beat Maria Sakkari of Greece in straight sets in New York in the semi-final and will now face Canadian Leylah Fernandez for the title on Saturday.

Congratulating the British teen, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted: “What an incredible achievement at this year’s #USOpen @EmmaRaducanu!”

It continued: “We will all be rooting for you tomorrow.”

“Wishing you the best of luck!“

Kate Middleton is patron of the All-England Lawn Tennis Club and enjoys attending Wimbledon each year.

Emma Raducanu is the youngest British tennis player to reach the US Open final in the Open era.

The teenager grew up in Bromley and has not even dropped a set during her run to the final.

If she becomes victorious, she will be the first British woman to win a grand slam singles trophy since 1977, when Virginia Wade won Wimbledon.

Raducanu told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I never thought it would come this early to be in a Grand Slam final.

“I’m really enjoying my time in New York and that’s showing in my tennis. Tonight, being under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium, it’s so iconic and I think I was just thriving in the moment.”

“I think honestly being young, there is an element of you do play completely free.

“I don’t feel any pressure to win. Any pressure is self-inflicted. I have expectations of my level and how I want to perform but there’s no pressure in terms of results.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson also congratulated the young tennis player: “Well done @EmmaRaducanu for a brilliant win at the #USOpen. The whole country will be cheering you on in the final.”
