Grace Kelly’s grandson Louis Ducruet is set to get married today to his bride Marie Chevallier, in the same cathedral where his grandmother wed Prince Ranier III in 1956. The Monegasque Royal Family does share some ancestral ties with the British Royal Family, however Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, paid a stunning style tribute to Princess Grace in her 2011 royal wedding to Prince William. Amazon Prime documentary “William & Kate: The Journey” takes a look at some of the comparisons. 

The “elegant looks and slender builds” of the two royal brides is not the only trait they share. 

Royal reporter Ashley Pearson delves into the intricacies of their wedding day styles. 

She draws comparisons with the bodices of both royal wedding dresses, and how they used intricate lace to form the elegant long sleeves. 

Both dresses had covered buttons on the bodice, too. 

Grace’s dress buttoned up the front, while Kate’s Alexander McQueen gown made a feature of them down the spine. 

What’s more, Kate used Grace’s perfume on her big day. 

Called “Florissimo” by Creed, it was actually made for Princess Grace by her husband Prince Rainier III for their wedding day. 

Whether “consciously or subconsciously”, Ms Pearson argues: “Kate wanted to remind the world that this has been done before, a commoner marrying a future king. 

“She really was channelling the late Princess Grace in more ways than one.” 

Princess Grace’s dress was a gift from Hollywood Studio MGM, designed by costumier Helen Rose. 

It is now owned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it is sometimes put on display. 

Meanwhile, Kate’s dress was displayed at Buckingham Palace in 2011. 

Kate’s sumptuous dress was not the only message she was sending on her unforgettable royal wedding day, either. 

Biographer Andrew Morton also delves into the message conveyed by Kate’s stunning tiara. 

Mr Morton, in his 2011 book “William and Catherine”, writes: “The dress, which echoed the gown worn by the Duchess of York, later Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, on her wedding day in 1923, was complemented by the Cartier Halo tiara which the Queen had loaned for the occasion. 

“The tiara, made in 1936, was a gift of the then Duke of York – his life made famous by the Oscar-winning movie The King’s Speech – to his bride three weeks before ehe succeeded his brother as King. 

“If Catherine was sending out a message, it was that she would support her husband through thick and thin, just as the new Queen Elizabeth had done when her stammering husband took his first tremulous steps as King George VI. 

He adds: “A sign, too that her family would be an integral part of her new life was perhaps demonstrated by the fact that she wore diamond-set stylised oak-leaf earrings, based on the Middleton family’s new coat of arms, which her parents gave her for her wedding day.”
