Express.co.uk readers can vote in our poll on whether you would pay 20 euros for a coronavirus test before you travel to the Canary Islands. The destination is reportedly looking at safety measures as it prepares for tourists to return.

Spain will start to welcome holidaymakers back from June 21.

Canary Islands President Ángel Víctor Torres has said it is important the islands are considered one of the safest places in the world to take a holiday following the coronavirus crisis.

Tourists could be required to take a coronavirus test before they travel, costing around 20 euros.

It comes as Britons could be forced to abandon plans for a holiday abroad this summer due to the Government’s 14-day quarantine policy.

People flying into the UK currently have to self-isolate for two weeks.

The measure is aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking at Friday’s Downing Street press conference, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps revealed the Government is looking at “air bridges” to allow Britons to go on holiday abroad.

He said officials are talking to airlines about the possibility of opening up ”travel corridors”.

The measure would mean travellers arriving from countries where the risk of coronavirus infection is deemed to be low not having to self-isolate.

Mr Shapps said: “Then we would look at if we could open up air bridges, which might be better described as travel corridors, and that’s something that we’re actively working on.

“The first review of this takes place on June 29.

“We are talking to airlines and talking to airports and will talk to other countries about it, but the basic principle must be that we don’t end up in a second wave situation.

“We will only open up air bridges when it is safe to do so and there will be more on that on the review period on June 29.

“What we don’t want to do is re-import it and the idea of the quarantine is the right thing to do and it has broad public support.”

EasyJet boss Chief executive Johan Lundgren has said he believes summer holidays will be possible.

He said: “We would hope and would be really looking forward to restrictions being either lifted, or air bridges put in place where it made sense to do so, allowing UK customers as well as people in the rest of Europe to be able to go on a holiday.”

The airline restarts operations today for the first time in 11 weeks.

Mr Lundgren insisted he would “feel 100 percent safe” on full planes.

He said: “The recommendations that we’ve implemented have been defined together with international regulators Easa (European Aviation Safety Agency), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and also our own company’s medical doctors and expertise.”

He added that not operating a single flight in nearly three months had been “devastating” and the airline is “super-excited” to return.
