George Galloway mocks Keir Starmer’s ‘zombie’ shadow cabinet in stunning jibe

After being announced as the new Labour Party leader at the weekend, Sir Keir Starmer has already named his shadow cabinet. The former shadow Brexit secretary appointed a few familiar faces including leadership rival Lisa Nandy and former Labour leader Ed Miliband. Former Labour MP turned commentator, George Galloway took the opportunity to mock the new shadow frontbench during an interview with ex-Mayor of London Ken Livingston.

Mr Galloway asked the former Mayor: “It looks like the people who departed Jeremy Corbyn’s frontbench are pretty largely back again like zombies.

“The return of the undead. Is that thrilling you so far?”

Mr Livingston defended the choices: “Keir Starmer’s clearly going to put together a broad coalition.

“There’ll be people from the left and people from the right of the party.”

He continued: “He’s going to try and unite the party after all this division of recent years.

“None of this is particularly easy. When I became the leader of the Greater London Council, I had a completely left-wing administration.

“There were no right-wingers in it at all and that was a mistake.

“You’ve got to actually reflect the balance of opinion in the party.”

The former London Mayor added: “What strikes me about the appointments Keir Starmer’s made is that while I wouldn’t agree with the politics of all of them, broadly they are competent.

“They’re the sort of people that look like they could run a Labour Government.”

Mr Livingston also weighed into the debate over whether the new head of the Opposition could actually lead Labour to power.

He told Mr Galloway: “That’s why I would support him.

“I think of all the three candidates, literally he’s the one most likely to defeat Boris Johnson.”

Others featured in Sir Keir’s cabinet include leadership rivals Rebecca Long-Bailey and Emily Thornberry.

Jeremy Corbyn allies, Barry Gardiner, Ian Lavery and Richard Burgon, were axed from the line up.

Anneliese Dodds takes over from John McDonnell as Shadow Chancellor, while new deputy leader Angela Rayner replaces Mr Lavery as party chair.
