Furious Italian MEP hits out at ‘Germany’s ‘imposing’ EU role

Brexiteers have long bemoaned the apparent dominance of Germany within the EU. Even today, the German President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, sparked fury as she waded in on the Brexit debate, dismissing hopes of negotiating a Canada-style free trade agreement with Britain. But it is not just Brexiteers who complain about the increasing German presence within the trading bloc.

In an interview with Express.co.uk, Italian MEP Antonio Maria Rinaldi hit out at Berlin and its meddling in Europe.

He said: “Many countries have now understood that this increasingly German influence is not a good thing.

“Here, they say ‘you have got to share regulations and laws’.

“But if these regulations are more often than not written for the use and consumption of three countries, mainly Germany, then they are not shared.

“They are imposed and that is not a good thing.”

Moreover, the Italian MEP went as far as to say: “I will tell you this.

“Germany has already won World War 3, without having to fire a single shot.

“Just by making us all sign into this political union.”

When asked whether his party, Lega, headed by Matteo Salvini, will then push for an Italexit, Mr Rinaldi claimed he does not think it will be necessary.

The Italian politician argued that if the bloc does not fundamentally change in the foreseeable future, it will just “crash” on its own.

He said: “Nothing needs to be done.

“We are here watching from the sidelines.”

According to ex-Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan, though, there will be at least three more countries that will follow Britain out of the EU in the next couple of years – Italy being one of them.

Mr Hannan noted: “The question is not if Britain will rejoin the EU. The question is who is going to be the next to leave.

“Who is going to be the first to join us and the other 170 odd countries outside the EU, trading with our neighbours but governing ourselves.

“There are two ways in which it could happen.

“It could happen accidentally because of some economic shock.

“In that case, I think Italy would be a candidate.

“Or it could happen Brexit-style. In other words a referendum. Demand for a referendum and a successful referendum.

“I think I would probably at the moment put my money on the Netherlands.

“But I have to nod in the direction of Denmark, which is also having a similar debate.”
