Former royal chef gives insight into Prince Harry and Prince William’s lives as youngsters

Prince William and Prince Harry have always been aware of their royal status. But, as children, they shared one trait in common with their peers – they weren’t fond of broccoli and vegetables, according to their former chef Darren McGrady. 

As he shared a recipe to make the perfect crispy skin-on chicken thighs on his Youtube channel, the chef revealed what William and Harry’s nanny had to do to make sure they were eating enough greens.

He said: “William and Harry loved this [the crispy chicken and mac and cheese] with shucked corn.

“But when the nanny was in the house she insisted ‘the boys must always eat their greens’.

“And so, she insisted that it was broccoli all the time. 

“The boys, I guess like any boys, weren’t huge fans of broccoli, but what she said was ‘when you do the broccoli – I want you to have one piece of broccoli with each piece of chicken.

“So, the boys had to have the broccoli if they wanted to have the chicken.”

Chef McGrady added both Harry and William had big appetites growing up.

He said: “And of course the boys were big eaters.

“Two, three, sometimes four pieces [of chicken], that meant they got the broccoli.”

Taking advantage of the chef’s abilities and the brothers’ hunger, the nanny even made a suggestion to chef McGrady to make sure Harry and William ate even more greens.

He recalled: “I remember nanny coming out of the dining room afterwards.

“And she said, ‘well they ate their broccoli.

“‘Next time you do it, can you do bigger florets of broccoli, please?’

“Winked at me and walked out!”

Chef McGrady has often opened up about other royals’ favourite meals.

The chef, who before entering the royal kitchen worked at the five-star Savoy Hotel in London, became Princess Diana’s chef in 1993, after having worked for the Queen for more than a decade.

Speaking about the monarch’s eating habits, the chef once revealed the Queen is quite frugal and only eats what is in season.

He said: “She’s very disciplined like that.

“She could have anything she wanted, but it is that discipline that keeps her so well and so healthy.” 

However, when it comes to chocolate, the Queen can be quite picky.

He said: “She likes chocolate, but only dark chocolate, the darker the better.

“She’s not a big fan of milk or white chocolate.”

The chef then revealed Bendicks Bittermints, small dark chocolate treats filled with mint which earned the Royal Warrant in 1962, are the Queen’s “favourite for snacking”.
