Forget EU! Britain MUST prioritise US trade talks, says Brexiteer

The MP for Wycombe and Chairman said the UK must start parallel negotiations with the US as soon as Brexit happens. He claimed the US is ready for negotiations and could provide a boost to UK businesses. Writing in the Telegraph, the European Research Group chair said: “They are ready to negotiate, they are prioritising us and the window for success is closing as the US heads into presidential elections.

“That is why this Government must fully commit to parallel trade talks, immediately prioritising the US.

“The day for action on US trade is the day we leave the EU.”

He echoed the words of Woody Johnson, US Ambassador to London, who claimed America is the worlds largest economy.

The Ambassador believed a trade deal with the US would offer huge potential for British businesses.

Mr Baker claimed the US is the country’s “greatest friend”.

He added: “They too fundamentally believe in liberty, that pioneering spirit that rises above mere materialism, along with ambition and courage and the hope that a better future is there, not merely to be discovered, but to be created through the energies of an entrepreneurial people seeking tirelessly to serve others for profit and moral sentiment.”

There may be further opportunities for trade with countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

The MP claimed these countries want the UK to “become international equals”.

He added: “These old friends outside the EU are those we need most right now.

“If they are bewildered, it is only because we have been hesitant in reorienting ourselves to the global outlook we have chosen.”

However, Mr Baker believes “none surpass the power of the US to achieve change for good”.

Mr Baker claimed the UK would still be at the mercy of the EU should it favour talks with the bloc over the US.

He said: “But deep dangers are ahead. By linking access to its markets with demands for regulatory harmonisation, the EU makes itself a global outlier.

“We need immediately to end the UK’s timid Eurocentrism by negotiating simultaneously with independent, free-trading partners.

“Accepting the export of EU power would deepen our recent humiliation as we succumbed to be a mere regulatory satellite, unable to join old friends as equal partners.”

Mr Baker claimed after meeting EU ambassadors and their teams, he had found “categorical differences of approach”.

He added: “When the EU demands level playing field provisions, we must agree the UK will not distort our markets artificially to secure advantages that ordinary commercial processes should yield.

“But this cannot mean harmonisation.”

He claimed there was a “myriad of objections” to trading with the US.

He explained: “Of course, we won’t sell the NHS but we do need to earn the funds to pay for it.

“Yes, food in the US is good to eat and we must be unafraid to say so.

“And no, the US is not protectionist but they do wish to avoid importing other countries’ anti-competitive practices.”
