LBC Radio host Nick Ferrari mocked phone-in cyclist Ian, who rang up to share his grievances over the new highway code and inadequate cycle lanes in the UK. Ian described a number of British cycle lanes that he refused to use due to the colour and how they were made. Mr Ferrari demanded his money back as the cycle lanes have been built onto the roads with taxpayers’ money.

Cyclist Ian said: “The highway code changes, they are just formalising general practice.

“I mean, I cycled all the way on South West London when I was a community nurse and down the narrow roads, I cycled down the centre of the road.

“Because I can’t move my little left finger because someone opened a car door on me.”

Mr Ferrari added: “Right, I see ok, if you had a cycle lane I trust you’d use it to your left, I trust you’d use it.

Cyclist Ian said: “And when I… No, a lot of cycle lanes I don’t use because they’re stupid.

“Have you seen the one in King Street Hammersmith?”

Mr Ferrari added: “I love it, it’s one of my favourites.”

Ian however dismissed his assessment as “absolute lunacy.”

The LBC host added: “I love that one, sometimes I just go to look at it, If I could I’d stroke it.”

Cyclist Ian said: “Pedestrians are always getting knocked down because it’s going the wrong way.”

Mr Ferrari said: “Why have I spent all this money building cycle lanes for you if you can’t be bothered to use them?”

Cyclist Ian said: “Well because they’re dangerous.”

Mr Ferrari added:” No, no no but why? I want my money back! If you’re not prepared to, I want the road back, I want the road back!

“I’ve paid my money for this, I want the road back!”

Cyclist Ian interrupted: “I’m a taxpayer!”

With new driving laws kicking in next week due to changes to the highway code, many drivers and cyclists are unhappy with the new rules they must follow on the roads.

Changes include how motorists use roundabouts and more. The changes have come from the Department for Transport who have pumped in £338million.

The Department of Transport invested the money to encourage Brits to take up cycling and walking.

The introduction of E-Bikes around the UK’s cities in London and Birmingham has been noticeable, as it is now easier to pick one up in most areas in central cities.

But many cyclists already feel the roads are not safe enough for them, and the cycle lanes built into the roads have been described as unusable.

Senior Director of Policy for Lime UK&I, Alan Clarke said: “After the worst of the pandemic was over and strict lockdowns lifted, a flurry of Londoners turned to our e-bikes as an easy, open-air and socially distanced means of transport.

“Figures are showing first-hand the positive impact that such infrastructure can have on cities. We’re delighted to support the Mayor and Transport for London’s vision of a city which prioritises cycling and other micro-mobility options over cars – and this boom in e-bike use is a testament to their leadership in this area.”
