Duke and Duchess of Sussex donate to Texas women’s shelter damaged in storm

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have donated to a women’s shelter that was damaged in a large storm which hit Texas.

The Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support in Dallas was badly damaged by Winter Storm Uri as its ceiling collapsed and burst pipes caused flooding of the onsite school.

Women homed at the centre in Dallas – which was forced to close for the first time in its 35-year history – were relocated to hotels, other shelters and the homes of family and friends.

Following a series of donations to the organisation, CEO Jan Langbein said “our hearts have been warmed by the support and generosity of people from all 50 states and five foreign countries”.

She added: “Today we have been notified that through the actions of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s nonprofit, Archwell Foundation, Prince Harry and Meghan will make a donation to help us get back on our feet.”

In a tweet, the Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support wrote that through the Archewell Foundation, Harry and Meghan are “supporting us by replacing the roof at our transitional housing facility and helping us meet our immediate needs”.

Last week, Harry and Meghan told the Queen they will not return as working members of the Royal Family.

In a statement, the duke and duchess said: “We can all live a life of service. Service is universal”.

A source close to the Sussexes said “there was absolutely no question” that Harry and Meghan had wanted to keep their positions and, while they do “respect the decision, they always made it clear they were committed to doing their roles”.
