Daughter lashes out at 'worthless, selfish' drink driver who blamed dead victims

A daughter has lashed out at a ‘worthless’ man who killed her mother then tried to blame her for the crash.

Coral Rose described Ricky Lee Nicholls, 42, as a selfish individual after he crashed into her mother Jenny Rose, 78, as she headed home from bingo.

Nicholls was more than twice the drink driving limit when he sped at 80mph through a 50mph zone killing Mrs Rose and badly injuring her passenger William Marriott, 70, in a head-on collision.

He was on the wrong side of the road but claimed his victim’s passenger was grabbing her steering wheel because she was not looking where she was going.

Coral, one of Mrs Rose’s three children, said her mum would be truly missed.

She said: ‘She was the kindest, most beautiful, caring, selfless mum anyone could wish for. She was the beating heart of our family.

‘I have so much anger at him. He is a worthless, selfish individual who is responsible for the death of my mum. No sentence will be long enough to bring us justice. I hope that everyday for the rest of his life he is haunted by this.’

Nicholls crashed into Mrs Rose and Mr Marriott on August 25 last year in Sutterton, Lincolnshire.

He had been to a house party when the crash happened despite being caught over the limit twice in the past.

His car veered onto the wrong side of the road while going round a corner, straight into the path of Mrs Rose’s car.

Prosecutor Mark Watson said: ‘The defendant failed to negotiate a sweeping left-hand bend. He went straight through the curve entering entirely on the wrong side of the road.

‘Jenny Rose was driving well within the speed limit. She was on her correct side of the road. The impact was a head-on collision. There was catastrophic damage to both vehicles and Mrs Rose passed away at the scene.’

He could have had another victim, a passenger who got out of his car moments before the crash after having a row with him.

In court he finally accepted that he was in the wrong and that his memory of events, blaming Mrs Rose, was false.

He was jailed for seven years and banned from the roads for nine years.

Judge John Pini QC said: ‘Through your speeding, drunken and dangerous driving you have left a trail of carnage behind. You should never have been behind the wheel.’
