Danny Drinkwater charged with drink-driving after crash in Cheshire

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been charged with drink-driving after a crash in Cheshire, police have said.

The footballer was involved in a one-vehicle collision shortly after midnight on Sunday night.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: “A 29-year-old from Nether Alderley has been charged with drink-driving following an incident in Cheshire.”

The crash happened on Ashley Road in the Mere area.

Police added: “He has been released on unconditional bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on Monday 13 May.”

Drinkwater, who has three England caps, signed for Chelsea from Premier League title winners Leicester City in 2016 for £35m.

However, he has not featured under current manager Maurizio Sarri or played a competitive game for 13 months.
