Professor Karol Sikora of the University of Buckingham warned the UK could see a second and third coronavirus wave within the year. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Professor  Sikora insisted a third wave would bring significant economic turmoil for the UK. The former Chief of the WHO’s Cancer Program claimed there are coronavirus models that indicate the UK could see a second coronavirus wave by this winter, and another in the early months of 2021.

He added these waves would push the UK into economic turmoil and impact the most vulnerable people throughout society.

Professor Sikora said: “There will be a second wave in September and a third wave in February 2021.

“There will be lockdowns again and importantly to me, closure of the NHS for anything besides coronavirus.

“Therefore it will stop cancer treatments, heart treatments and all the other things the NHS does.”

Professor Sikora also reflected on the economic crisis the UK would have to deal with if faced with a third coronavirus wave.

He said: “Economically, it is £2.5billion a day to impose lockdown.

“We will be bust, we are bust now and we are going to be even more bust by Christmas whatever happens.

“There is going to be personal pain and certain sub-groups of society that will bear that pain.”

Professor Sikora also highlighted those within the UK who would suffer the most if the UK struggle through another economic COVID-19 related crisis within a year.

He said: “The people that are unemployed now because of coronavirus, those on low income paying jobs who are vulnerable.

“They have no stored money in the bank, outgoings to pay, food for their children, mortgages to pay and they will be stuck.

“We have got to keep moving, my position on the disaster model is it is interesting and we have to bear it in mind but to me, it seems much more likely we are coming to end of this now.”

Professor Karol offered a glimmer of optimism as he claimed, despite the data from some models, current NHS coronavirus data hinted the UK may be coming to the end of the crisis.

He said: “To me, it seems a lot more likely we are coming to the end of this now.

“If you look at all the data from the NHS and Public Health England, it is showing everything is coming to an end.

“When you look at what has happened in the last two weeks, people have come out of lockdown and we have had mass demonstrations.

“During the demonstrations, people were very close and we haven’t seen a massive spike.

“We have seen illegal parties and raves, loads of people on the beaches and yet when you look at the data there has been no increase in incidents.”
