Coronavirus warning: Residents get NHS text message tells them to AVOID GP

The city is at the centre of the UK outbreak, with Scout leader Steve Walsh thought to have infected up to 11 people, some of whom are abroad. Now, some residents have been sent extraordinary alerts via the NHS’s text messaging service.

The text reads: “If you have symptoms of a cough, fever or shortness of breath and have recently returned from a South East Asian country, do not come to the surgery, instead call NHS 111.”

The message, which comes from the sender “NHS no reply”, has added to a tense atmosphere in the south coast city.

Professor Samer Bagaeen, who is on the city council’s health board, accused the NHS of not revealing enough information about the spread of the virus. He said: “They have intentionally hidden the implications of the infections.

“Nobody is stepping into a leadership role and everyone is passing the buck.”

Brighton and Hove has seen two GP surgeries close, while two schools have staff placed in isolation and a community centre has temporarily shut.

There are thought to be nine UK cases of coronavirus. Public Health England is working to track down people who may have been in contact with any of those infected.

One of the UK cases fighting the infection has been revealed to be a baby.

The number of people who have died from the infection in China is about 1,350, with those infected nearing 60,000.

Some 242 deaths were recorded in Hubei on Wednesday, the deadliest day so far.
