Careful Kate! Duchess of Cambridge warned Camilla making clear she will be Queen first

Camilla will be Queen by ‘law’ reveals royal expert

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge is expected someday to take on the title of Queen Consort once Prince William becomes king after his father. But before the Duchess gets an upgrade on her title she will have to wait for Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall to first be crowned as Princess Consort to Charles. And Camilla appeared to send a clear signal to stress she will come before Kate when it comes to the throne, according to expert Maeba Bardelli.

In a bulletin for RAI programme UnoMattina, Ms Bardelli said: “The Duchess of Cornwall took the field with the power of books and launched her book club.

“The Reading Room is perhaps her first project of her own. And watch out Kate, her royal cypher appears in the logo.

“A C topped by the crown. Will sweet Kate still sleep soundly?”

Kate is officially Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge and her official cypher differs only slightly from the one Camilla was granted when she joined the Royal Family in 2005.

While the Duchess of Cambridge’s monogram is of a cursive C topped with the coronet of the child of the heir apparent, the Duchess of Cornwall’s is of a block C topped with the coronet of the heir apparent.

Asked whether Kate could bypass the royal order and become Queen before Camilla, expert Ilaria Grillini said: “First Camilla and then Kate. This is what the rules want and so it will be.”

She also noted the only way the change could happen is if Charles opted to give up his spot in the line of succession but noted the Prince of Wales is unlikely to ever renounce his right to the throne.

Ms Grilline added: “He will not give up, he will never give up. It’s like saying that he will renounce something he was born for, that stays there every time the goalpost moves ahead. But the day will come sooner or later.”

RAI London correspondent Marco Varvello echoed his colleague insisting Camilla will be coming ahead of Kate in the line of succession.

He said: “We are talking about different generations, so first Camilla and then Kate.

“The problem is that medicine works wonders and so the old royals used to die at 40. Long live the Queen now but it’s clear that there is a problem. Not only has Queen Elizabeth been on the throne of England the longest, but Charles is also the longest-living heir to the throne in the history of England.

“For Camilla and Kate, however, I do not see any direct competition for the throne.”

However, Kate is likely to hold a title Camilla is not expected to receive when Charles becomes king.

Upon the couple’s marriage in 2005 Buckingham Palace announced the Duchess of Cornwall would become known as Princess Consort to Charles rather than Queen Consort.

References to the decision were removed from Clarence House’s website but the residence, which serves as the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall’s office in London, confirmed no changes had been made to the proposal in 2020.

Royal experts have since noted Camilla would automatically become Queen Consort despite the official decision as traditional royal brides take on the feminine form of their husband’s titles.

The Duchess already opted out from taking on the title of Princess of Wales despite having a right to it because of the deep link between the role and Princess Diana.
