Camilla and Prince Charles: Why didn’t Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall go to Japan?

Prince Charles has embarked upon a two-day trip to Japan, to witness the ceremony of enthronement of Emperor Naruhito. Although Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall is often by the Prince of Wales’ side for royal engagements, it appears this time Camilla did not accompany her husband.

Prince Charles is visiting Japan between October 22 and October 23.

The enthronement ceremony was attended by representatives from royal families across the world, including King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden and King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

Prince Charles was also present for the enthronement ceremony of the previous Japanese emperor, Emperor Akihito.

Clarence House posted on Instagram: “The Prince of Wales will visit Japan on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen to attend the Ceremony of Enthronement of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito.

“The visit will take place from 22 to 23 October and will include a day of engagements in Tokyo to celebrate British-Japanese connections.”

Camilla and Charles made a joint visit to Japan in 2008, but this time around the Duchess of Cornwall has not made the trip.

The Duchess has admitted in previous interviews she has a fear of flying.

In an interview on ITV’s This Morning, Camilla said she doesn’t accompany Charles on some overseas visits for this very reason.

With the hours it takes to get to Japan from the UK ranging in the double figures, the Duchess has decided to sit this royal engagement out.

However, the Duchess of Cornwall also reportedly has a number of important events organised for this week.

Camilla opened the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases and Brownsword Therapies Centre at the Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH) on Tuesday.

The cause is close to the Duchess’ heart, as she has been President of the Royal Osteoporosis Society following the deaths of her mother and grandmother from the illness.

Clarence House have also said the Duchess of Cornwall will be attending a tea reception to mark the seventh anniversary of the National Literacy Trust’s Books Unlocked programme in Mayfair on Thursday.

Prince Charles and other royals watched the Emperor promise to uphold Japan’s constitution today in a centuries-old ceremony.

The celebration is expected to continue into this evening, with dignitaries and Japanese government members attending a court banquet.

Prime Minister Abe will also host a banquet at the Hotel New Otani.

Prince Charles and Camilla will be reunited when the Prince returns to the UK in two days time.

The pair are also scheduled to make a visit to New Zealand in November, the third royal tour in a matter of months.

Part of the official statement from Clarence House read: “The Duchess will continue her focus on key themes including domestic violence and literacy.”

The Prince of Wales will then split from his wife after a week in New Zealand to visit Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands.
