British boy, 12, drowns on holiday in France

A 12-year-old British boy has died on holiday in France.

He is believed to have drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake at a holiday camp in Berny-Rivière, northern France.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 6.30pm local time on Thursday after a lifeless body was reportedly seen by a lifeguard at La Croix-du-Vieux Pont campsite.

Local media reported the youngster was pulled from the water and airlifted to hospital in Paris, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

In a statement issued today, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was supporting the family, believed to be from East Yorkshire.

A spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British child who has died in France and are in contact with the French authorities.’

La Croix-du-Vieux Pont campsite is popular with British tourists, around an hour and a half from Paris and the Disneyland resort.

The campsite is operated by the European Camping Group and different tour operators are based there.

It has not been confirmed which tour operator the family were travelling with.

A statement from Europcamp, one of the tour operators based at La  Croix-du-Vieux Pont said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.

‘We are actively cooperating with the European Camping Group (the campsite operator), the tour operator with whom the family are travelling, and with local authorities to determine the precise circumstances that led to the accident.

‘A further update will follow.’
