Brexiteers mock ‘embarrassing’ Alastair Campbell over refusal to use 50p Brexit coin

It comes amid Remainers’ claims that Boris Johnson’s Brexit celebrations are an attempt to “rub our noses in it”. There are approximately three million Brexit coins due to enter circulation on January 31, marking the UK’s departure from the European Union. Scores of Europhiles have claimed they will refuse to use the new coins in protest against Brexit.

Among them is Remainer and former political aide Alastair Campbell, who took to Twitter to share his anger over the new coins.

He wrote: “I for one shall be asking shopkeepers for ‘two 20p pieces and a 10’ if they offer me a 50p coin pretending that Brexit is about ‘peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’ given it puts all three at risk.”

Mr Campbell was soon pounced upon by netizens, mocking him for his protest.

One Twitter user replied to Mr Campbell: “All you’re doing there is inconveniencing low paid service workers who are probably in the middle of a million other things, not proving any point.

“Hope it’s worth it so you can feel good about yourself.”

Andrew Bartlett posted: “‘I’m going to cause problems for low paid retail workers’ is a really good look!”

Nikki Page wrote on Twitter: “The people chose to Leave! Accept it and take the 50p!”

Lesley Lubert replied: “Shove your 50ps where the sun don’t shine. I shall be proud to spend mine in the normal way.”

One Twitter user posted: “The next 12 months will be hilarious as the fanatical end of the Remain spectrum just keeps piling embarrassment on embarrassment.”

Mr Campbell was joined by Labour peer Lord Adonis, who declared on Twitter: “I am never using or accepting this coin.”

Many claimed the two men were “stamping their feet” like children by refusing to use the coin.

Leigh Henry replied to Lord Adonis: “What will you do if you get one of these in your change? Throw a tantrum at the till?”

As part of the launch of the coin, the Royal Mint will open its doors for 24 hours to let people strike their own commemorative Brexit coins.

On Friday, the Prime Minister will deliver a special address to the nation to mark the historic day.

Downing Street will be illuminated with a light displayed designed to symbolise the strength of the country.

A countdown clock will also be projected onto Number 10.

However, the preparations have enraged politicians who tried to prevent the UK from leaving the EU.

Speaking to the Observer, Lord Heseltine accused the Government of trying to spite Remainers.

He said: “I think it is unwise of the Government to rub our noses in it by celebrating our defeat at this hour, whilst talking about unifying the country.”

His comments were echoed by the Liberal Democrats acting leader Ed Davey, who claimed the Government should not be using public money to “gloat with an expensive party”.
