Boris Johnson tweets from his hospital bed saying he's 'in good spirits'

Boris Johnson has tweeted from his hospital bed to reassure the nation he is in good health after testing positive for coronavirus.

He said: ‘Last night, on the advice of my doctor, I went into hospital for some routine tests as I’m still experiencing coronavirus symptoms. I’m in good spirits and keeping in touch with my team, as we work together to fight this virus and keep everyone safe.’

He added: ‘I’d like to say thank you to all the brilliant NHS staff taking care of me and others in this difficult time. You are the best of Britain. Stay safe everyone, and please remember to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.’

The PM was admitted for tests yesterday after his Covid-19 symptoms lasted more than seven days.

Downing Street said Mr Johnson still has a persistent cough and a temperature as he battles coronavirus and will remain in hospital under observation.

His official spokesman declined to say what treatment he had received and dismissed reports in Russian media that he is on a ventilator as ‘fake news’.

He insisted the PM was fit enough to lead the Government in his condition.

He said the PM had received his ministerial red box containing his official papers and was continuing to work from had been working on official papers from hospital.

‘The Prime Minister remains in charge of the Government’ his spokesperson said.

However, in Mr Johnson’s absence, the daily government coronavirus meetings are being chaired by Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State.
