BBC Question Time: Brexiteer left heartbroken as she says her vote is now ‘meaningless’

The audience member told Fiona Bruce she doesn’t believe a general election will solve the Brexit issues in the deeply divided country as she doesn’t see how her vote will mean anything. Her comments come as Prime Minister Boris Johnson has attempted to call two snap general elections in the past two weeks which opposition parties have rejected. He believes it’s the only way to break the Brexit impasse while Labour want to put it back to the people by having a second referendum.

She said: “I just wanted to take issue with the idea that having a general election is the best way to resolve this problem democratically.

“I live in a Leave constituency and there’s a huge majority for my current MP.

“My vote is meaningless in this current situation and it is very demotivating and depressing when I care deeply about what’s going on in our country right now.”

Another member added: “Having a general election now is all well and good but what’s the point of having a Government if you’re not going to let them govern?”

Conservative Minister Brandon Lewis added delaying Brexit would be a “massive hit for democracy” if the UK are still in the EU after October 31.

Tensions were raised among the audience in Norwich with many demanding the Government needed to deliver Brexit and respect the results of the 2016 referendum.

Mr Lewis claimed it was down to parliamentarians who had let down the people every time.

The Conservative Security Minister went on to say the UK should have left the European Union by now.

He said: “We should’ve left already. I think to go beyond October 31 would be hugely damaging for democracy.

“We haven’t yet done what we said we would do, which is do what the people were going to vote on.”

The MP for Great Yarmouth added: “We’ve had the referendum, a decision was made and my view as a democrat is we must deliver on that.

“I think to delay it again would be a massive hit for democracy.”

The Conservative Minister’s statements were met with roaring applause from the audience in Norwich.

Mr Lewis went on to relate his point back to an audience member’s previous demands for a general election.

He said it highlighted why the Prime Minister previously tried to hold a general election.

He said: “We could have had the general election and had the new prime minister with a mandate before the next European Council.”
