A34 tragedy: Man killed after being struck by ambulance in Oxfordshire

The fatal crash occured on the A34 northbound between the junctions for Peartree and Islip, near the Hinksey Hill interchange.

Thames Valley Police said its officers were called to the scene at about 3.20am on Friday morning.

A statement said: “Officers attended the scene where sadly the pedestrian, a man aged 35, had died.

“Next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers.”

The 35-year-old was walking on the northbound carriageway when he was struck by the ambulance.

Mark Ainsworth, Director of Operations at South Central Ambulance Service, offered his sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man.

He said: “The ambulance was not travelling under emergency driving conditions at the time.

“The Trust and the ambulance crew are assisting Thames Valley Police with its investigation into the collision.

“It is normal practice in such circumstances for the driver of the vehicle to be suspended from driving duties whilst any external and internal investigations are undertaken.”

The main road saw miles of queuing traffic as emergency services shut the road following the incident.

Queues of up to two hours were reported at 8am this morning but traffic has now eased.
