Dennis Oland will be the only witness for the defence on the stand at his trial today in the death of his multimillionaire father in Saint John, N.B.

Oland began his testimony late on Wednesday, declaring his innocence in the bludgeoning death of his father, Richard Oland, on July 6, 2011.

The soft-spoken investment adviser told the court he wants to testify in his own defence so people can hear from him directly about the last time he saw his father the day he was murdered.

There are some inconsistencies he will have to address, including why the 51-year-old businessman told Saint John police on July 7, 2011 that he was wearing a jacket different to the one he did wear.

The jacket he had on was found to have small bloodstains on it and his father’s DNA.

Dennis Oland was charged with second-degree murder in 2013 and convicted in a jury trial in 2015, but the verdict was set aside on appeal and a new trial was ordered.
