Chris Watts’ tender last act towards kids revealed before he slaughtered them

Chris Watts treated his daughters to pizza and let them FaceTime their granddad just hours before he murdered them.

The killer was planning what to do with the bodies of his pregnant wife Shanann, and daughters Bella, four, and Celeste, three, as he spent the weekend with his children.

Documents relating to the heart breaking case have been released after Watts was sentenced to life in prison last week.

While Watts’ pregnant wife Shanann went on a work trip, he looked after their daughters at their home in Frederick, Colorado.

He took the girls swimming at a friend’s pool party and as the girls played in the sun, he texted his co-worker to let him know he planned to drive straight to the Anadarko oil field first thing the next day.

This is where he would bury Shanann in a shallow grave and dump his girls bodies in crude oil tanks.

But before he smothered his daughters, Watts treated them to pizza and lollies and let them FaceTime their granddad for what he didn’t know would be the last time.

He gave the girls a bath, dinner and a bedtime treat before tucking them in at around 8pm.

Watts told them their mum would be home soon but within hours they would be dead.

Shanann returned home from a work just before 2am on August 13, and was murdered a short time later.

Watts left the family’s home at 5.48am with the bodies of his family piled in the back seat of his truck, and then drove to the oil site where he dumped them.

Meanwhile, the final pictures of Shanann, Bella and Celeste, taken hours before their murders, were also released in the documents.

Watts, 33, sent photos of the girls to Shanann on the day he finalised his plans to wipe out his family so he could start a new life with his secret lover.

Sent at their mum’s request, they show the sisters having breakfast at a dining table inside the family’s home in Frederick, Colorado.

Shanann, who was away on a business trip and was desperately trying to save her marriage, later responded with a selfie showing her smiling in the sunshine before her flight home.

She later told him: "Thank you for taking good care of the kids this weekend so I can learn and work, I appreciate it!"

As well as the heartbreaking pictures, disturbing details of how the family’s decomposing bodies were found have been revealed in new crime scene reports.

Shanann was discovered in a "foetal position" in a shallow grave at a nearby site where he worked.

The 34-year-old, who had been 15 weeks’ pregnant with a son, had her knees "pulled up to her chest" and her feet positioned "up".

Her face was "facing down into the ground", while her back was positioned upwards, according to the reports, released last week.

Her left arm, meanwhile, was extended near her head.

Shanann, a "loving" mum, was located around "nine inches below the surface grade" at an Anadarko Petroleum site where Watts worked.

The bodies of the couple’s daughters, Bella, four, and three-year-old Celeste, were discovered at the bottom of oil tanks at the site.

They were found after workers began the process of "unloading and emptying" the contents of the tanks during the investigation.

Another report documents the autopsies of the mum and daughters, which took place at a Colorado medical centre on August 17.

According to the report by a crime scene analyst, all of the victims’ bodies were in an "advanced state of decomposition".

Shanann was dressed in a "T-shirt, bra and panties".

Devastatingly, the "remains of a foetus were visible". At the time of her murder, she had been pregnant with a son she was going to name Nico.

The report says Bella was wearing a "onesie" and underwear – while her younger sister was dressed in a nappy, underwear and a T-shirt.

After dumping the bodies, Watts gave an interview to a local TV station on August 14 appealing for them to come home.

But his lies quickly unravelled as police dug deeper into the case.

Friends and colleagues said he didn’t seem too upset when he claimed his wife and daughters were missing.

Watts was arrested on August 15 and the bodies were found on August 16.
