Schoolboy, 12, creates gadgets to combat dementia and asthma

Arnav Sharma, 12, is obsessed with technology and said: “I want to get into engineering when I’m older so I can design things.

“And I want to invent stuff that can help people – there’s more point to it if it will improve someone’s life.”

When he was seven he saw a pal have an asthma attack in the playground and decided he wanted to help sufferers.

Arnav went about developing the AsthmaPi kit, which can detect if an attack will happen.

It uses sensors to monitor the air for dust, pollen and carbon dioxide levels. Sufferers can also use it to learn what is triggering their crises.

“People with asthma who have heard about it message me on social media ask me if it’s available to buy.

“They think it could help them. And I get parents who say they want to use it to help their kids.

“It would be great if someone could lend a helping hand so it could be out in the market.”

Arnav went on: “I’m only 12 and have school and stuff so I can’t really set up a business yet. But I’m hoping to make my inventions available one day. I want people to be able to benefit from them.”

His mum Manisha, 43, added: “We can’t push the products into the commercial market without proper testing. I think because of his age people refuse to give funding.”

Arnav’s achievements have helped him win accolades including two at BT’s Tech4Good Awards 2016, for which he designed trophies a year later.

Proud Manisha said: “We are amazed he has done all this at such a young age. Me and my husband have no knowledge of this kind of technology.

“I offered to take him to a class where he could learn coding, but he said he’d already learned.

“He’s always doing one thing or another. It’s always a mess in the house.

“He finds school boring because he’s way ahead. I tell him he has to go. But it’s a real struggle to get him to go!”

Tech4Good organisers are keen to hear from other young inventors at tech4goodawards.com.
