Family identifies second Parkland survivor found dead from suicide

The second survivor of the Parkland, Florida, mass school shooting who committed suicide since March 17 was identified by his family Tuesday as Calvin Desir.

Desir was a 16-year-old sophomore at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a former student armed with a semi-automatic assault rifle killed 17 students and staffers.

He died Saturday night, while the other survivor, Sydney Aiello, 19, took her own life the Sunday before.

Authorities had not released his name, but he was identified by a sister, Brittany Wright, on a GoFundMe page the family created.

“My family is grieving over the loss of a wonderful and amazing son, brother, nephew, and friend. We are raising money to support all funeral cost for my brother. He was a fellow student at Stoneman Douglas with strong aspirations of one day becoming an engineer, which inspired him to always find new projects around the house to challenge his skills,” she wrote.

“I can tell you firsthand that he was one of a kind, very soft-spoken, and never once hurt a fly. If you ever asked him to do the simplest task, he was right on it. His selflessness and quick action to help others is something that we all deeply admired,” she continued.

“Calvin Desir was truly special to us all and will forever live on in our hearts. We love you Calvin!”

On Monday, the father of a first-grader who was among the 26 students and staffers massacred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., was found dead of an apparent suicide.

Jeremy Richman, whose daughter Avielle was killed in the December 2012 bloodbath, apparently shot himself in the head in a building that houses the foundation he created in his daughter’s memory.

If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal you can get help by contacting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
