BREAKING: ‘Food poisoning’ outbreak kills at least four at retirement home

A total of 22 residents fell ill after dinner last night at a residential care facility in Toulouse, southern France.

Along with the fatalities, 15 people are in intensive care and the others are “very seriously ill”.

A Red Cross crisis unit has since been set up at the Cheneraie retirement home in the village of Lherm

Deputy Mayor Frederic Pasian said: “Prosecutors have been informed that there is a strong suspicion of food poisoning.

“The residents all had symptoms at around 8pm – an hour and a half after their meal.”

Many were left “vomiting and displaying other serious symptoms related to their meal.”

The facility is state run and is thought to have an excellent safety record.

Pascal Champvert, director of a local organisation specialising in the care of the elderly, said: “It was opened in 2006 and is presented as a high-end establishment.

“There are salaried cooks offering regional cuisine prepared on site.”
