UK is being ‘HUMILIATED’ by EU as May begs for longer Brexit delay

The EU helps big corporations and politicians rather than its citizens, a British historian of France has claimed. Robert Tombs says he can’t think of another time when the UK has been so “ridiculed and pitied” around the world – even by banana republics, a term for politically unstable countries. His comments come as Mrs May has asked the EU for an extension on Brexit until June 30.

Mr Tombs said in the Mail on Sunday: “It is staggering that the European Union has been allowed to mesmerise our hapless Government and self-indulgent Parliament.

“What is the huge attraction of remaining stuck to an enterprise in such steep decline? Just look at what is actually happening across Europe, where opposition among voters to Brussels is growing.

“The reasons are obvious. While the EU helps big corporations, bureaucrats, politicians and professionals, there is very little benefit to most people.

“In fact, it wrecks the lives among the most vulnerable.”

Mr Tombs added there is a rise is extremist parties across Europe as opposition towards the EU is growing.

He used France as an example of a country going through political unrest due to the Yellow Vest protesters taking to the streets for the 21st week on Saturday.

He blamed President Macron for attempting to push down public spending to suit the EU, while also hoping to become he leader of a European federal superstate.

Mr Tombs also added Brussels’ financial policies are contributing to growing unemployment in other EU countries such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Romania.

But Mr Tombs Britain has so far “escaped the worst damage” from the bloc.

He said: “Although EU membership has long been a drag on our economy, especially manufacturing, we have so far escaped the worst damage.

“Our employment rate is at record highs, in fact, and ages are rising, thanks to a welcome post-referendum fall in the pound. “There is much to celebrate – yet look at the way we are going to Brussels on bended knee time and again.

“We have been humiliated before, and sometimes we have been shamed. But I cannot think of any time when we have been so widely ridiculed and even pitied. Our rivals are mocking us. Even worse, our friends are embarrassed.”
