Nigel Farage’s attack on EU chief backfires and it’s absolutely peak Brexit

It was a divisive election, plagued by alleged anti-democratic tactics, that handed the winning side just 52% of the vote.

But we're not talking about Brexit . Oh no. This is the election for the new head of the European Commission in Brussels.

Last night Ursula von der Leyen won 383 of 733 votes cast by MEPs to replace Jean-Claude Juncker as President of the powerful bloc.

The German politician is set to be the first woman to hold the post from November 1, one day after the UK is meant to leave.

With her support for expanding EU powers, an EU Army, and another possible delay to Brexit, it's no wonder Nigel Farage is furious she got the job.

But perhaps the Brexit Party leader should have taken note of the 52% result before he sent this tweet last night.

He wrote: "Ursula von der Leyen has scraped in by 9 votes. Power but no legitimacy."

Remainer Twitter users took no time at all to point out his side won by the exact same margin in the 2016 EU referendum.

"Well you would know all about that," wrote arch-Europhile Labour peer Lord Adonis.

Anti-Brexit campaigner Femi Oluwole said: "So what you're saying is… a 51.something% victory isn't enough for a vote to be legitimate? Would that be what you'd call "unfinished business"?"

Twitter user David Beckett wrote forensically: "The breakdown reveals she received 52.3% of the vote (383 votes in favour, 327 against, 22 abstentions, one vote not valid).

"Leave received 51.9% of the vote in 2016. Are you sure you want to get into an argument about legitimacy?"
