What retirement? Prince Philip’s surprise engagement – Duke shows no signs of slowing down

The 98-year-old officially retired from public duties in 2017. But he showed no sign of slowing down today as he carried out an engagement at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate, in Norfolk. This engagement will most likely have been close to the Duke of Edinburgh’s heart as he has been Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles since 2006.

The Royal Family posted a picture on Twitter this afternoon that was captioned: “Today The Duke received General Sir Nicholas Carter (L) who is relinquishing his appointment as Colonel Commandant of @RiflesRegiment and General Patrick Sanders (R) who will succeed him.”

General Sanders will replace Sir Nicholas Carter as Colonel Commandant.

Sir Nicholas has been Colonel Commandant since 2013 after taking over from Sir Nick Parker.

General Sanders was promoted to full general earlier this year and was also appointed to the Joint Forces Command.

Meanwhile, the Queen has spent most of this week at her favourite racing event, the Royal Ascot.

The 93-year-old monarch wore a raspberry pink dress, as well as her Jardine Star diamond brooch today.

She was joined by members of her family including the Duke and Duchess of York, Peter Phillips and Lady Helen Taylor.

Sarah Feguson wore a bright yellow number with a green hat as she accompanied her ex-husband Prince Andrew to the races.
