Revealed: The one royal who warned Princess Diana that her marriage to Charles was doomed

Diana and Charles, the Duke of Cornwall, were the centre of a huge media storm when the couple got married. But even before their marriage, Diana and Charles were under immense scrutiny by both the royal family and the media.

Before Diana married Charles, the couple were unhappy, with the Prince often ignoring Diana or belittling her.

However, one royal warned Diana that once they were married, their relationship would only get worse.

Princess Grace of Monaco, known also as Grace Kelly, had warned Diana of what was to come at their engagement reception at Goldsmiths Hall in London.

During the reception, Diana poured her heart out to Grace and told her all about her distant future husband and the pressure of the press.

Grace proved to be a good listener and issued the young Diana with a stern warning.

She said: “Don’t worry.

“It will get a lot worse!”

The conversation began between the two women when Diana appeared at the event acting uneasy.

Diana and Charles had previously had a row over the daring, black dress the Princess would be wearing to the event.

Although Diana was excited to wear the dress – which was designed by illustrious fashion designers David and Elizabeth Emmanuel – Charles thought the dress was “unsuitable”.

Anthony Holden, the author of the Prince Charles biography, ‘Charles: A biography’, described the moment in his book.

Mr Holden wrote: “The Prince was moved to spluttering protests, declaring her décolletage unsuitable for a member of the royal family.

“Black the colour Diana thought ‘the smartest you could possibly have’ was to him to be reserved for times of mourning.

“Fighting back tears, she replied simply and honestly that she had nothing else suitable for the occasion.

“So off they went in suitably sullen silence, shattered only by the roar of the crowd and exciting shouts of photographers as Diana made her highly dramatic, and typically distinctive, exit from the car and entrance into public life.”

Diana was “thrilled” to meet Grace Kelly as she had always admired her.

The women seemed taken by one another and so had the private conversation in the powder room.

Diana was the first royal bride to have a paying job when she married Prince Charles.

But Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge was the first royal bride to have a university degree.

Prince Charles dated Diana’s older sister Sarah, which is how the couple met.

Prince Charles and Diana were distantly related and were 16th cousins twice removed.

Prince William is also related to his wife Kate Middleton.

They are 12th cousins once removed, related through Sir Thomas Leighton.
