The Duke of Cambridge used to jokingly mock his younger brother Harry for remaining single for several months before meeting his now-wife Meghan Markle, according to royal biographer Duncan Larcombe. The author wrote in his book Prince Harry: The Inside Story: “‘You are an official gooseberry,’ William said to his kid brother as the pair of them and Kate returned from an official engagement on the way back to Kensington Palace. It was a remark that would have made Harry very angry had it come from anyone else. 

“But William’s words were meant in jest, and as the royal protection officers drove them back home that night in the late spring of 2016 Harry was able to laugh them off in his usual way.

“In reality, William was spot on.”

Mr Larcombe depicted Prince Harry’s life as a bachelor in grim terms, claiming that, after his love story with Cressida Bonas ended in 2014, Prince William’s brother focused on his work and tagged along the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to carry out engagements. 

Appearing in public next to happily married Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and William, Harry’s lack of companionship stood out even more, according to the author.

He continued: “The missing link in Harry’s life was on display nearly every time he left his cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace.

“With their young children needing space, William and Kate had moved to a much larger apartment at KP, leaving Harry to leave the bachelor life alone.

“When the Range Rovers dropped the three of them back at the palace, Harry would return to an empty home.

“Even if he was buzzing from performing in front of the adoring crowds, this development in his personal circumstances simply underlined the void in his life.” 

This rather aloof image of Harry’s months before meeting Meghan Markle in the summer of 2016 was confirmed by a close friend of the Duke of Sussex, who spoke to Mr Larcombe.

The un-named friend said: “Although William would tease his brother for being single, and playing the role of gooseberry when he was at official engagements with Kate, it was increasingly difficult for Harry.

“He is very much a people person and hates spending time in his own company.

“But with the young prince and princess to look after, more and more of William and Kate’s time was dominated by family life. 

“There were times when Harry would have to spend hour after hour holed up in his cottage alone.”

Prince Harry and Ms Bonas dated for two years, between 2012 and 2014.

After the pair broke up, the now Duke of Sussex was not spotted dating anyone for approximately two years, until he is believed to have met Meghan on a blind date which many believe had been set up by their common friend fashion designer Misha Noono.

Their relationship was made public by the media in October 2016.
