Northern Ireland RIOTS: Horror as violence erupts in Derry – petrol BOMBS and SHOTS FIRED

Police have appealed for “calm” after reports came through of incidents breaking out in the Creggan area. Supt Alan Hutton said: “We are currently responding to reports that a member of the public has been injured. I would appeal for calm.”

In shocking footage posted on Twitter, cars can be seen torched as onlookers watch on nervously.

According to one social media user the incident is taking place on Fanad Drive.

She adds that “serious rioting” and “dozens of petrol bombs” have been thrown at police officers.

Multiple cars have been torched and cars burst into flames.

Reports are suggesting that masked men fired shots at Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Some say that it is due to hostility towards the British Crown Forces after an armoured car went into the Republican heartland.

Other videos show a huge security presence in nearby Mulroy Gardens.

Army technical officers are seen as a house is promptly searched.

There were also reports a hijacked van was set on fire and fireworks were thrown at police during rioting.

Writing on Twitter, the PSNI added: “Absolutely no excuse for attacking PSNI colleagues in this manner.

“They are protecting that community and aren’t there for the good of their health.

“Such behaviour should be roundly condemned.”
