Michael Gove lashes out at ex-Tory David Gauke – ‘He’s got it precisely wrong!’

Conservative MP Michael Gove spoke to BBC Breakfast about shocking comments from former justice secretary David Gauke. Mr Gauke lashed out at his colleagues, claiming that a Conservative majority at the next election would be a “bad outcome for the country”. He also confirmed he will run as an Independent candidate on December 12.

Mr Gove rubbished the claims: “David is a good friend, but I think on this issue he’s got it precisely wrong.

“The only way we can get Brexit done and move on with the people’s priorities, investment in our NHS and policing and education, is by making sure that we do have a functioning majority Government.

“We want to get Parliament working for the British people, and that means that we need a working majority.

“The only way that we can make sure that the division and paralysis that we’ve seen in Parliament over the last few months ends is by giving Boris Johnson that strong majority in Parliament which will ensure that we can get this Brexit deal through and then get on with investing where the country needs it.”

Mr Gauke also said that the Tory party would “pursue a hard Brexit, putting prosperity at risk”.

Mr Gove denied these claims too: “Well, again, I respectfully disagree with David on that.

“What we’re pursuing is a good Brexit deal which works for the whole United Kingdom, which will enable us to have a relationship with the European Union based on free trade and friendly cooperation.

“It will also enable us to conclude trade deals with other countries as well, which will be good for British consumers and helping to keep prices down, and also good for British companies in making sure that we can export more so that more people have well-paid jobs and job security.”

Mr Gauke also talked specifically about a refusal to extend the implementation period beyond 2020.

Mr Gove guaranteed to the BBC that this was going to happen and there would be no further extension.

If no deal is reached by the end of 2020, the UK would then leave the EU on WTO terms.

This is a move that Mr Gauke described as “devastating” to many sectors.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said: “Again, I think that David, for whom I have a lot of respect, is wrong in that regard.

“We’re going to get a good deal with the European Union, and we’re going to get it by the end of 2020.

“One of the problems that we’ve had is that Parliament has engaged in endless dither and delay on this.

“And that’s because we haven’t had a strong majority, which has been capable of getting Parliament working and making sure that we can not only secure a good Brexit deal, but also focus on the other issues that matter so much to many people.”
