Labour ‘fantasy politics’ trashed as Brexiteer predicts huge election result for Tories

Speaking to Sky News, the former Conservative MP claimed Labour’s and Lib Dems’ Brexit promises are “fantasy” as the two opposition parties could only stop Boris Johnson from delivering on the Brexit vote with two implausible parliamentary procedures. Mr Jackson explained: “The key thing is this is fantasy politics from Labour and the Liberal Democrats about stopping Brexit and having a second referendum.

“Essentially, it’s a binary choice. You either bring down the Government by a no confidence vote or you put primary legislation in an act of Parliament to revoke Article 50.

“I can’t see either happening. Certainly not the second one.

“Labour does not have a majority even within the parliamentary party to do that.

“So I don’t think revoke is going to happen and I don’t think there’s going to be a second referendum.”

Asked whether the Conservative Party should still be worried about Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party stealing Tory Leave seats at the next general election, he replied: “In an election where people seriously think McDonnell and Corbyn are going to take over as the government of this country, I think that would concentrate the minds of pro-Brexit supporters, particularly if we have already left.

“I think that’s the key thing.”

He added: “The danger for Labour and the Liberal Democrats is a 1983 situation where they both get early twenties.

“Point being, they were playing on the same turf and the Conservatives came through on about 40 percent.

“And that can happen again.”

The warning comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson was left with a working majority of just one in the House of Commons after the Tories were defeated in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.

The Liberal Democrats won the mid-Wales constituency by a margin of 1,425, swinging the vote nearly 12 percent from the Tories.

An electoral pact saw Plaid Cymru and the Green Party stand aside to boost the chances of a pro-EU MP being elected, and Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson predicted further alliances in future.

The first major electoral test of Mr Johnson as Tory leader became his first defeat with the announcement of Jane Dodds’ victory in the early hours of Friday.

The Tory loss will add to the Prime Minister’s challenges to steer Brexit through Parliament and may increase the chances of a snap general election.
